You have probably grown up within a particular function, i.e. clinical, medical, research, business, etc.
And, all of a sudden, as CEO you’re responsible for all functions!
Now here’s the thing…
You don’t need to become an expert overnight in all of those other functions where you didn’t grow up.
Because first, you can’t, and even if you could, you shouldn’t do it anyway!
Because you’re not the soloist, you are the conductor!
And I mean, I can empathise with you when you know that and still want to be the soloist!
It’s hard to give up on all these things… you care, you want to have peace of mind, you want more control, who doesn’t?
But, your power, your biggest leverage is in finding the best talent, trusting them, creating the best culture, and providing a runway for them to do their jobs.
Your job is not to tell them how to play the violin or the cello.
Because there’s nothing more demoralizing for the soloist than being told how to play that note…
You are the conductor… you are the visionary, the communicator, the motivator, the strategist.
Now this is good news… because you can take a step back, breathe, relax.
You don’t have to dive in and learn everything about everybody’s job.
Just watch them. Do they have everything they need?
Talk to them. Listen for their fears, concerns, and challenges.
Coach them. Assume they have all the answers.
And I’m saying this again… I get it when you sometimes want to borrow their violin, it can also be fun for you, right?
That’s okay… they can give it to you for a minute but not for the whole concert, okay???
